History

1980

The Kinnatingal tennis academy and sports complex has a long and interesting history that dates back to the early 1980s. It all started as a small idea in the brain of an extraordinary organizer, leader and athlete, whose life was dedicated to saving lives from disease and passionate about sports and tennis in particular..Dr. Varghese Paul…commonly referred to fondly as the founder of the academy.
During the late 1970 to early 1980, Trichur district was known for one of the most popular national level invitational prize money tennis tournaments in the country. Every year the top 8 tennis players which included Davis Cup players and great champions and legends like Ramanathan Krishnan have graced the tennis courts of Trichur.
Being invited for the tournament was considered to be an honour for the top players of those times and voted it as the possibly their favourite tournament of the year such was the hospitality and fan fervor surrounding it.

During those times, Banerji Memorial club was the heart and soul of tennis and could be arguably called the golden era of tennis of our district. The spectator stands used to be filled and sometimes overflowing with fans, to watch the best that tennis had to offer was on display, as TV broadcasts were not around during those times.
The onus for collecting the funds required to conduct such a mega event every year used to fall on the Trichur District Lawn Tennis Association president (TDLTA). The usual budget used to be around 1 lakh rupees.
It was during the year Dr Varghese Paul was the president of TDLTA, that he realised the difficulty with which ,this was accomplished every year.
He started ruminating on the novel idea of having a concerted effort of collecting a one time corpus fund that could be kept in the bank. The annual bank interest (which used to high in those times) that this corpus fund would generate was to be used towards the yearly budget of invitational prize money tournament. This would negate the need for the TDLTA office bearers yearly ritual of walking around with a "begging bowl" as, Dr Varghese Paul called it.
He presented this idea at the annual General body meeting of the TDLTA to his friends and well wishers, who happily agreed to be part of the venture.

Dr Varghese Paul fondly used to talk fondly of the way his friends who has promised very generous amounts under the influence of heavenly spirits during the fellowship hours night before, still honoured their word the next day. It was infact this kind of honour, respect and trust that the whole of the community of Trichur district had towards each other and particularly towards Dr Varghese Paul that went on to collect much more money than needed to conduct the tournament.
This corpus fund needed a name as well as legal acceptance and security. The name of the fund thus collected was christened as the TRICHUR TENNIS TRUST...
The name of the major donors were the generosity of one man in particular at this juncture, Mr Jose Francis of the kinnatingal family,... cannot be over emphasised here. He was the pillar around which Dr Varghese Paul could build on his vision and dreams for our own Trichur District.
Once the corpus amount collected became of significant value and the momentum and enthusiasm had reached a point, Dr Varghese Paul started to dream bigger..

His passion for tennis along with his vision to build a tennis academy and sports complex of national repute in our District started giving him sleepless nights.
He also wanted to give back something to all generous individuals who had donated money freely and whole heartedly hoping for nothing in return.
With his trusted all by his side, Mr Jose Francis, who encouraged him to push on for the same, by promising him even more financial backing, if he ever needed, gave Dr Varghese Paul, every bit of confidence to move onto creating amazing club that we are all part of now...
The child called TRICHUR TENNIS TRUST(TTT) had grown to become THE KINNATINGAL TENNIS ACADEMY AND SPORTS COMPLEX.
